The highly anticipated R-rated comedy The Hangover Part II grossed an incredible $31.610 million from an R-rated record 3,615 theaters on Thursday (including an R-rated record $10.4M from Thursday midnight screenings). That’s a new record for the biggest opening day ever for a live-action comedy and nearly doubles the original, which grossed $16.734M in its opening day (Friday, June 5, 2009) and it’s the third highest-grossing Thursday ever (behind “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” — $50.014M — and “The Matrix Reloaded” — $37.508M).
Kung Fu Panda 2, meanwhile, also got an early start on the weekend. The family-friendly kids film debuted to an estimated $5.8M on Thursday. The film is expected to increase significantly over the weekend, as kids are out of school. The first film grossed $20.304M in its opening day (a Friday) in June 2008.
