Last month it was reported that Warner Brothers was courting Keanu Reeves to star in John Hughes’ live-action adaptation of Akira. Now, however, JoBlo is reporting that the actor has passed on the project:
The discussions were early but optimistic as Reeves seemed to have interest in the material but we can confirm that Reeves has officially joined Brad Pitt, James Franco and Ryan Gosling as actors who’ve passed on starring in AKIRA. And that’s not the only speed bump Team AKIRA experienced this month on the way towards production.
Warner Brothers also responded to rumors that production had shut down, or was being delayed, issuing a statement denying such things:
“Production on ‘Akira’ has not halted or been shut down, as the film has not yet been greenlit and is still very much in the development stage. The exploratory process is crucial to a project of this magnitude, and we will continue to sculpt our approach to making the best possible film.”
