J.J. Abrams’ super secretive sci-fi project Super 8, which is currently filming in West Virginia, has been given a June 10, 2011 release date by Paramount Pictures. Details on the project are scarce, but rumors suggest it has something to do with aliens.
The date puts the film in direct competition with the action film Fast Five and the romantic comedy Something Borrowed, so there shouldn’t be concern over potential audience cross-over between the three films. Paramount also avoids May releases including Thor (May 6), Priest (May 13), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (May 20), The Hangover 2 and Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom (both on May 27) and they also get a jump on a crowded June/July which includes: Green Lantern the week after (June 17), Cars 2 and Rise of the Apes (both June 24) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (July 1).
In other box office scheduling news, Summit Entertainment as pushed back the Nicolas Cage action pic Drive Angry by two weeks to February 25, 2011 (from February 11, 2011) .
