With the recent unfortunate news of the recurrence of‘Spartacus’ star Andy Whitfield’s cancer, Starz is said to be exploring their options for the hit original series, options which include recasting the lead role.
Though the actor would most likely play Spartacus, another, much less likely, possibility involves re-shaping the series around a new central character. If no suitable candidate is found, Starz and producers may opt to delay or cancel production.
The decision to audition other actors was made in conjunction with Whitfield, who is said to support the series continuing forward.
Should the show resume production on season two without Whitfield as Spartacus, producers for the Starz series continue to search for ways to have the actor remained involved in the show.
The 6-episode prequel series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which was greenlit after Whitfield first had to leave production due to cancer treatment, is still scheduled to air next January with filming currently underway in New Zealand. Production on the second season of ‘Spartacus’ is scheduled to start immediately afterward.
