Resident Evil: Afterlife grosses franchise best $26.65M; Takes in $68.1M worldwide

Resident Evil: Afterlife, the fourth film in the franchise and first to release in 3D, grossed a franchise best $26.65 million from 3,203 theaters, taking full advantage of being the weekend’s sole new release.

‘Afterlife’ bested its predeccesors both in opening day and opening weekend:

  • “Resident Evil” (2002) — $6.768M / $17.707M
  • “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” (2004) — $9.231M / $23.036M
  • “Resident Evil: Extinction” (2007) — $9.614M / $23.679M
  • “Resident Evil: Afterlife” (2010) — $10.739M / $26.650M
    • Friday — $10.739M
    • Saturday — $9.81M (-8.7%)
    • Sunday — $6.102M (-37.8%)

The film performed even stronger overseas, taking in $41.446M to put its worldwide cume at $68.096M.  Very impressive for a film that carried a production budget of $60M.

Rounding out the top five at the box office this weekend were: “Takers” (#2 -$5.676M / $47.681M cume); “The American” (#3 -$5.674M / $28.111M cume); “Machete” (#4 -$4.294M / $20.917M cume) and “Going the Distance” (#5 -$3.788M / $13.952M cume).
