Update: Article updated with final actual numbers.
The Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy The Other Guys opened in a solid 1st place for the weekend with $35.543 million. The film doubled-up its nearest competition, with Inception taking 2nd place with $18.505 million ($227.638 million cume) followed by Step Up 3D which debuted in 3rd place with $15.812 million.
For Will Ferrell, The Other Guys marks his 2nd-biggest opening of his career, behind 2006’s “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (also directed by Adam McKay) which opened with $47.042M. And for Wahlberg, the film is his biggest debut since 2001’s “Planet of the Apes” ($68.533M) and his 3rd-biggest debut of his career (“The Perfect Storm” opened with $41.325M in 2000).
Meanwhile, this was the weakest start for the Step Up franchise, below both the 2006 original ($20.66M) and 2008’s Step Up 2 the Streets ($18.909M). Not a good sign considering the studio opted for 3D for this third outing.
With its foreign cume at an estimated $251.2 million, Inception has now raked in an estimated $478.838 million worldwide and is the 2nd-biggest film for both director Christopher Nolan and lead star Leonardo DiCaprios.
Rounding out the top five were Salt ($10.908M / $91.788M cume) and Dinner for Schmucks ($10.375M / $46.621M cume).
