The Steve Carell/Paul Rudd comedy Dinner For Schmucks managed to gross just slightly more than Inception on Friday, taking in an estimated $8.4 million to Inception‘s $8.15 million (est. $173.978M cume). However, Inception is expected to carry the weekend with between $25-27 million. That would mean yet another sub 40% drop. Very, very impressive. Dinner With Schmucks is expected to do about $22-24 million which is better than the norm for Paul Rudd, but below Carell’s average, including this past April’s “Date Night” ($25.2M). Finishing in third place was Salt, which took in an estimated $5.9 million (est. $57.462M cume) which could translate to an $18-20 million weekend.
Charlie St. Cloud, starring Zac Efron, premiered in line with expectations, taking in an estimated fourth place $5.615 million for what should be a $14-15 million opening weekend. Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, however, had a very soft opening of an estimated $4.225 million for sixth place. The film will only do $12-14 million for the weekend. 3D can’t help every movie. Despicable Me continued its strong legs, as it finished in fifth place with an estimated $4.685 million (est. $179.491M cume).
