TCA Press Tour 2010: Don’t call CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 a remake

Producers of the upcoming CBS drama Hawaii Five-0 want to make one thing perfectly clear: They’re rebooting, not remaking, the classic series.

“We’re trying to do the same thing we did with ‘Star Trek,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who was also one of the key forces behind the big-screen return of the popular science-fiction series in 2008. “We have to find the spirit of what the original was all about, and then expand the rules and bring something new and fresh to the table.”

Where the original show was more focused on solving the weekly cases, producers say their version will be more lighthearted and include a lot of banter between stars Alex O’Loughlin (Det. Steve McGarrett) and Scott Caan (Det. Danny Williams). There will also be subtle references to the original series and then of course there’s the theme song:

“That is one of those things that had to be respected,” noting that some of the musicians who played on the original theme were recruited for the new version,” said Kurtzman.  “A great theme song is a lost art,” he said. “It would be a huge disservice not to bring it back.”

Hawaii Five-0 premieres Monday, September 20, 2010 on CBS. The series also stars Daniel Dae Kim as Det. Chin Ho Kelly and Grace Park as Kona Kalakaua.
