Despite atrociously low ratings — with one episode even falling below 1M viewers — Airlock Alpha is reporting that Syfy will renew Caprica for a second season.
The network recently announced that the back-half of season one — 10 episodes remain to be aired — will premiere next January. Airlock Alpha adds that the second season renewal will likely be for less episodes (possibly 10 or 13) instead of the 20 episodes season one was picked up for.
That number could change depending on ratings, but let’s be serious here, ratings are not going to improve Syfy is only keeping the show around because it’s a favorite among critics and that helps the “prestige” factor for the network (much like Battlestar Galactica). The season 1.0 finale drew 1.10 million viewers and a 0.5 A18-49 rating while the first half drew an average of 1.20 million viewers and a 0.4 A18-49 rating through nine weeks.
