DiCaprio’s Inception holds off Jolie’s Salt — $13.2M to $12.7M — in Friday box office

Angelina Jolie’s Salt put up a strong showing against the Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer Inception, but in the end it was the Christopher Nolan-directed spectacle that took the #1 spot on Friday. Inception grossed an estimated $13.23 million from 3,792 theaters, down only 39% from its week-ago opening and pushing its 8-day cume to a strong est. $113.388 million. The film should add a total of $40-42 million this weekend putting it about two days away from a $150M domestic cume.

Despite failing to take the top spot, Salt opened to a very solid $12.7 million from 3,612 theaters. The Philip Noyce-directed action thriller looks headed for $33-35 million for the weekend.

Despicable Me had another strong hold taking in an est. $7.325 million on its third Friday (down just 28% from last Fri.) putting its 15-day cume to an est. $144.926 million. It’ll finish the weekend with between $24-26 million. Rounding out the top five, Romona and Beezus debuted in fourth place with an est. $3.0 million while The Sorcerer’s Apprentice fell to fifth place with an est. $2.95 million (est. $35.908 million cume).
