Update: Article updated with actual data.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse took in a solid, albeit not spectacular, $64.83 million Friday through Sunday pushing its 5-day cume — Wednesday to Sunday — to $157.58 million. That was a good deal below initial estimates of $69.0 million and $161.0 million.
The 3-day opening figure is fourth best for Independence Day weekend (“Spider-Man 2″ holds the record with $88.16 million).
For comparison purposes ‘New Moon’ — which opened on a Friday — grossed $164.67 million through its first five days — including a still-current box office single / opening day record $72.7 million — and had a 3-day opening of $142.84 million.
The Last Airbender, meanwhile, managed to overcome horrendously low reviews to take in a solid $40.33 (40.65) million for the 3-day weekend and $57.84 million for its 4-day cume. That was nearly identical to the initial estimates ($40.65M / $57.0M).
Including Monday figures, ‘Eclipse’ took in $176.38 million while The Last Airbender took in $69.32 million. For comparison purposes, Spider-Man 2 (which also opened on a Wednesday) had $180.07 million through its first six days.
