The Steve Carell / Tina Fey comedy Date Night took first place with an estimated $9.3 million from 3,374 theaters, coming in a big higher than initial expectations. The film out-grossed last week’s #1 Clash of the Titans which took in an estimated $8.435 million from 3,802 theaters (est. $92.028 cume). Finishing in third place was How to Train Your Dragon which posted a solid estimated $7.1 million (est. $115.641M cume).
That sets up for a three-way race to the top for the weekend. All three films look headed to finish the weekend with between $25-28 million. After a slightly weaker than expected opening weekend, ‘Dragon’ has rebounded nicely and will have a good shot at beating last year’s Monsters vs. Aliens despite the significantly weaker start.
Rounding out the top five were The Last Song (est. $3.6M / $36.023M cume) and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too? (est. $3.5M / $41.02M cume). Click over the jump for the daily chart.
