DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon grossed $43.732 million from 4,055 theaters. The film took in $12.112M on Friday, increased an impressive 44.6% on Saturday to $17.519M and dropped 19.5% on Sunday to $14.101M. The film matched its domestic performance overseas — where it added $42.301 million — putting its opening weekend worldwide cume at $86.033 million.
Finishing in second place for the weekend was Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which dropped 48.2% in its fourth weekend to take second place with $17.708 million. That puts the Disney 3D feature at an impressive $293.535M domestically (and an estimated $656.5M worldwide).
The other wide new release this weekend was MGM’s R-rated comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, which debuted a little weaker than expected in 3rd place with $14.02 million from 2,754 theaters. Head on over the jump for the weekend chart and more analysis including an update on Avatar.
Rounding out the top five was The Bounty Hunter ($12.007M / $38.418M domestic cume) and Diary of a Wimpy Kid ($10.122M / $35.898M domestic cume).
On the Avatar front, although it shed another 306 theaters this weekend (placing 11th place while playing in just 930 theaters), it still managed to gross another $2.047 million which puts its domestic cume at $740.44 million. Theater loss hasn’t been as quick overseas, allowing for it to pick up an estimated $7.6 million from 63 markets. That puts its overseas cume at a massive $1.95 billion and its worldwide cume at an estimated $2.69 billion, absolutely blowing away Titanic’s previous records: $600.788M domestic / $1.843B worldwide.
Put another way, Avatar has grossed more overseas alone than Titanic grossed worldwide. Extraordinary isn’t it?
