Captain America shortlist down to three?

According to their sources within Marvel, IESB is reporting that the shortlist for the actor who will play Captain America / Steve Rogers in Joe Johnston’s The First Avenger: Captain America has been narrowed to three: Channing Tatum; Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan.   Both Tatum and Evans had been rumored previously, but Stan (who last year starred in the short-lived NBC series Kings) is a new name and is rumored to be high on Marvel’s list.  And that could be a problem.

Stan hails from Romania and Marvel and director Johnston have gone to great lengths in the past to say the character would be played by an American [via IESB]:

Which leaves the Gossip Girl actor who we are told is the favorite to swing the star-spangled shield next July. The problem is Marvel Films big-cheese Kevin Feige has made it crystal clear (on numerous occasions) Captain America will be played by an American and Stan hails from Romania. But apparently he’s done a solid enough job in his screen-tests to make the key decision-makers give second thoughts to that stance.

The First Avenger: Captain America is scheduled to begin filming this June in London and hits theaters on July 22, 2011.
