Weekend Box Office: Alice stays strong ($62.7M); Disappointing debuts for Green Zone ($14.3M) and other new releases

Based on the final actual studio numbers, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland increased slightly from the studio estimates, grossing¬† $62.714 million from 3,728 theaters (a decline of just 46% from the weekend prior, a solid number for a blockbuster film). The four new releases were led by the disappointing Green Zone, which finished with a very weak $14.309 million, and followed by She’s Out of My League (#3 / $9.775M), Remember Me (#5 / $8.089M) and Our Family Wedding (#6 / $7.63M). Alice in Wonderland out-grossed the combined weekend box office of those four new releases by nearly $23M ($62.714M vs. $39.804M).¬† Even more impressive, the film out-grossed the combined weekend box office of films in the #2-#8 spots by nearly $4M (62.714M vs. $58.946M).

Rounding out the top 5 was Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island which finished in fourth place and ahead of both Remember Me and Our Family Wedding, with $8.144M, pushing its 24-day domestic cume to a respectable $108.012 million. Avatar finished in seventh place for the weekend (its first time outside the top five), but still managed a very respectable $6.526M. Despite shedding another 445 theaters — the film is now playing in just 1,718 theaters — Avatar only declined by only 19.6% this weekend.
