Although there were four films that opened on Friday Alice in Wonderland was expected to easily beat the competition, and it did exactly that…and then some. ‘Alice’ grossed an estimated $17.4M on Friday from 3,728 theaters ($4,667 per theater average), pushing its 8-day domestic cume to $164.025M. What’s more impressive, however, is that the film grossed more on Friday than the next four films — all new releases — combined (est. $14.4M).
‘Alice’ should do a healthy $57-62M this weekend which would land it well past $200 million by the end of Sunday. Head on over the jump for more analysis and the daily chart.
Finishing in second place was the Matt Damon-starrer Green Zone, which posted a very weak $5.0 million from 3,003 theaters ($1,665 PTA). Needless to say, the other three new releases also performed very poorly: Remember Me (est. $3.6M); She’s Out of My League (est. $3.3M); Our Family Wedding (est. $2.5M). The way too expensive Green Zone (a reported $100M budget) will close out its first weekend with between $13-15 million. Remember Me and She’s Out of My League will battle for third place with around $9-10M followed by Our Family Wedding in fifth place with around $6-8M.
Rounding out the top 10 was Shutter Island in sixth place with an estimated $2.4M, crossing the $100M mark on its 22nd day of release (est. $102.268M domestic cume). Avatar was seventh with an estimated $1.675 million and is now at an estimated $725.419 million domestically. Brooklyn’s Finest (est. $1.4M / $18.461M cume), Cop Out (est. $1.26M / $36.473M cume) and The Crazies (est. $1.1M / $30.808M cume) took the 8-10 spots.
