Tuesday Box Office (March 2, 2010): Shutter Island 1st ($1.9M), but Avatar a strong 2nd ($1.5M)

Shutter Island took first place Tuesday with $1.937 million ($79.254M domestic cume), but the bigger news came courtesy Avatar which surged up to 2nd place with $1.486 million ($709.304M domestic cume).  The late surge — it was up 18% from last Tuesday despite playing in 125 fewer theaters — can likely be attributed to the fact that Avatar will lose most if not all of its 3D screens this Friday when Alice in Wonderland opens. Heck, that’s what I did on Monday. Head on over the jump to see the daily chart.
