1939 Detective Comics No. 27 (Batman’s debut) sells for more than $1 million

A 1939 issue of Detective Comics — issue No. 27 featuring the first appearance of Batman — sold for $1,075,500 in a New York auction today, setting a new record for the most paid for a comic:

The rare copy of Detective Comics No. 27 from 1939 went for $1,075,500 Thursday. A Heritage official said it was sold on behalf of an anonymous consignor and the buyer wished to remain unnamed as well.

“The buyer wanted to be extremely anonymous, but I can say he’s a very serious comic book collector and has been since childhood,” said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auction Galleries.

The sale comes only a few days after Action Comics No. 1, which features the first appearance of Superman, sold for a then-record $1 million.
