Weekend Box Office Estimates (Feb. 19-21, 2010): Shutter Island debuts to strong $40.2M; Valentine’s Day drops to $17.2M, Avatar up to 3rd ($16.1M)

Shutter Island provided star Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese with new personal bests (both together and separate) with a very solid estimated $40.2 million from 2,991 theaters.  The film opened to an estimated $14.13M on Friday, an estimated $16.3M on Saturday and is projected to have a 40.1% slide on Sunday to $9.77 million.

Last week’s #1 Valentine’s Day dropped a steep 69.5% to an estimated $17.16 million from 3,665 theaters ($87.422 million cume), while Avatar moved up a spot from last week to third place with an estimated $16.1 million, down just 31.8% from last weekend.  Domestic cume for Avatar now stands at $687.821 million.  The film will pass $700 million domestically before the end of next weekend.  Worldwide cume for Avatar is now at $2.463 billion.

Last week’s other two openers experienced different results. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief had a standard 2nd week drop of 51% to an estimated $15.3 million (est. $58.76 million cume), while The Wolfman took a big hit, down 68.7% to an estimated $9.846 million (est. $50.315 million cume).
