Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island opened to an impressive $14.1 million on Friday, the director’s — and lead star Leonardo DiCaprio — strongest opening ever (ahead of the $8.69 million opening for the 2006 Oscar winner The Departed). Shutter Island is expected to win the weekend with $37-42 million, which would give both Scorsese and DiCaprio their best opening weekend ever ( prior best is The Departed’s $26.887 million).
Last week’s #1 Valentine’s Day dropped 61% day-on-day for an estimated 2nd place $5.68 million (est. $75.942M cume). Meanwhile, the battle for third place this weekend was very close with Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (est. $3.975M / est. $47.435M cume) just edging out Avatar (est. $3.9M / est. $675.621M cume).
