Update: Article edited with Friday actuals chart.
Original article follows below.
Three films opened last night, and all three managed successful debuts. Leading the pack was WB’s Valentine’s Day with an estimated $14.625 million from 3,665 theaters. Second place was battled out between Universal’s The Wolfman — which overcame negative publicity and poor reviews for a very solid estimated $9.85 million from 3,222 theaters — and 20th Century Fox’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief which took third place with an estimated $9.775 million from 3,356 theaters.
Projecting out the rest of the weekend, Valentine’s Day should close the 3-day weekend with between $45-50 million, followed by Percy Jackson with $30-35 million and The Wolfman with $25-30 million. All three films should see strong business on the Monday holiday, with Valentine’s Day somewhere around $55-60 million for the 4-day, ‘Percy Jackson’ around $40-45 million and The Wolfman at around $35 million or so. Head on over the jump for more analysis and the daily chart.
Rounding out the top five was Avatar in fourth place with an estimated $4.55 million (est. $642.156 million domestic cume) and Dear John in fifth place with an estimated $4.125 million (est. $42.003 million domestic cume). Avatar may have fallen to fourth place, but the film continues to amaze. Despite losing 315 theaters, it should do about $20 million for the weekend and perhaps around $25 million for the 4-day. That would put its weekend-to-weekend performance flat or or in positive territory. That’s phenomenal for a film in its ninth weekend.
