Weekend Box Office (Jan. 29-31, 2010): $31.3M Makes it Seven Straight for Avatar

Final numbers for Avatar were stronger than the estimates, with the film dropping just 10.5% in its seventh weekend for a new record of $31.28 million (beating Titanic‘s 7th weekend record of $25.907 million).  Avatar had no trouble topping newcomers Edge of Darkness ($17.21 million) and When in Rome ($12.35 million), out grossing the two films combined.

Avatar is now at $595.752 million domestically and will break Titanic‘s domestic record of $600.788 million on Wednesday. With its overseas tally at $1.447 billion, Avatar‘s worldwide cume is at a monstrous $2.043 billion. Head on over the jump for more analysis and the weekend chart.

Expanding a bit on the new releases, Edge of Darkness ended up on the lower end of expectations, grossing $17.21 million from 3,066 theaters, while When in Rome slightly beat expectations with a not so bad $12.35 million from 2,456 theaters.

Rounding out the top five was The Tooth Fairy stable in fourth place and down just 28.6% from last week with $10.0 million ($26.104 million domestic cume) and The Book of Eli was in fifth place with $8.908 million ($74.512 million domstic cume).

Making up the rest of the top ten was Legion in sixth place with $7.176 million ($29.023 million domestic cume), The Lovely Bones in seventh place with $4.727 million ($38.006 million domestic cume), Sherlock Holmes in eighth place with $4.515 million ($197.602 million domestic cume), Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel in ninth place with $3.997 million ($209.295 million domestic cume) and It’s Complicated in 10th place with $3.804 million ($104.111 million domestic cume).

Out of the top 10, but worth noting, was the $800,570 grossed by 17th place finisher The Princess and the Frog.  That was significant because it pushed the Disney 2D-animated film past $100M domestically, with its current cume at $100.352 million.

On the per-theater-average front, Avatar ($10,176) was edged out by the limited opened release of Saint John of Las Vegas, which pulled in $21,666 from two theaters for a PTA of $10,833.
