Avatar took in $3.24 million on Monday, pushing its domestic cume to $554.982 million. Together with its record foreign gross of $1.304 billion, Avatar has grossed an incredible $1.859 billion worldwide which is a new record (besting the $1.843 billion grossed by Titanic). Even more remarkable is that it did it through just 39 days in domestic release.
Avatar is just $45.806 million within the #1 all-time domestic record held by Titanic ($600.788M) and will pass that mark sometime before next weekend. Avatar was able to surpass Titanic‘s worldwide total before breaking its domestic total due to a stronger domestic/overseas ratio. At the moment, Avatar‘s split is 70.1% / 29.9% in favor of Foreign versus Domestic grosses. Titanic‘s split was 67.4% / 32.6%.
It’s no longer off-base to declare $2 billion worldwide (with at least $700M coming from domestic receipts) a lock. in fact, when all is said and done I think the final number will be closer to $2.3-2.5 billion! Head on over the jump for the daily chart.
