Weekend Box Office (Jan. 22-24, 2010): Avatar Breaks 6th Weekend Record; Now #1 All-Time Worldwide After Breaking Titanic’s Overseas and Worldwide Records

Avatar continues to tear it up at the box office, grossing $34.944 million and breaking the record for the top 6th weekend (previously held by Titanic, which grossed $25.239M in its 6th weekend). 20th Century Fox also confirmed that  Avatar broke Titanic‘s overseas record — $1.242 billion — over the weekend and broke the worldwide record — $1.843 billion — sometime today (Monday).

Overall, Avatar is at $551.741 million domestically and $1.292 billion overseas for a worldwide cume of $1.844 billion. Head on over the jump for more analysis and the weekend chart.

Among the new releases, Legion was tops this week, debuting in a respectable 2nd place with $17.502M from 2,476 theaters.  It finished well ahead of The Tooth Fairy which performed below expectations with a 4th place finish of $14.01M from 3,344 theaters.  However, the biggest disappointment of the week came courtesy the Harrison Ford/Brendan Fraser-starrer Extraordinary Measures.  CBS Film’s first theatrical release, the film opened in 8th place with a poor $6.013M from 2,549 theaters.

Rounding out the top five was The Book of Eli in third place with a drop of 52% from last weekend with $15.732M ($60.736M domestic cume / $70.736M worldwide cume) and The Lovely Bones in fifth place with $8.418M ($31.243M domestic cume / $38.345M worldwide cume).

Filling out the top 10 was Sherlock Holmes in sixth place with$6.628M ($191.077M domestic cume / $388.077M worldwide cume), Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel moved past $200M with a $6.404M seventh place performance ($204.140M domestic cume / $364.099 worldwide cume) and finally, It’s Complicated was ninth with $5.81M ($98.27M domestic cume / $148.77M worldwide cume) and The Spy Next Door was in 10th place with $4.585M ($18.545M domestic cume).
