Avatar grossed $3.945 million on Thursday, an increase of about 4% from the day prior and only -16% below what it did last Thursday (which was better, in terms of percentage hold, from last week’s Thursday-to-Thursday performance). Through 35 days, Avatar stands at $516.797M domestically. The film will pass The Dark Knight‘s domestic haul ($533.345M) on Saturday. Overseas, Avatar stands at a remarkable $1.173 billion, pushing its worldwide cume to $1.69 billion, or just about $153 million away from Titanic‘s $1.843B record (a record which will fall sometime next week).
Finishing in second place for the day was the Hughes brothers’ The Book of Eli, which grossed $2.044M — up 0.5% from the day prior — and pushing its domestic box office to a solid $45.003M through seven days of release ($49.503M worldwide cume).
Rounding out the top five, It’s Complicated took third place with $774,865 ($92.46M domestic cume / $130.947M worldwide cume) to sneak just ahead of The Lovely Bones in fourth with $764,707 ($22.82M domestic cume / $29.927M worldwide cume) and Sherlock Holmes in fifth place with $727,237 ($184.449M domestic cume / $356,149M worldwide cume).
