Weekend Box Office: (Jan. 15-17, 2010 + Jan. 18): Avatar 1st With Record $54.4M, The Book of Eli 2nd With $38.4M and The Lovely Bones in 3rd With $19.9M

The actual data didn’t come in too far from the estimates, with Avatar holding onto a solid first place with $54.401 million for the 4-day weekend ($42.786M for the 3-day).  Overall, Avatar‘s cume stands at $504.868M domestic and $1.132 billion overseas for $1.637B worldwide.

In addition to breaking the records for fastest to $500M, best 5th weekend ever and best MLK Jr. holiday weekend ever, Avatar passed the original Star Wars on the domestic chart on Saturday and currently sits at #3 all-time domestic.  Avatar will pass The Dark Knight ($533.345M) within the next week and Titanic ($600.788M) shortly thereafter.  Titanic‘s worldwide record of $1.842 billion will also fall within the next week or two.

Finishing in 2nd place for the 4-day weekend was The Book of Eli with a solid $38.438M ($32.789M for the 3-day), while The Lovely Bones finished in third place with a bit better than expected 4-day haul of $19.91M ($17.005M for the 3-day). The Lovely Bones opened wide this weekend, having previously played in limited release — in just three theaters in NY and LA – for the last five weeks.
