Including the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Avatar grossed an estimated $54.6 million. The number is based on Friday, Saturday, Sunday estimates of $10.4M, $17.25M and $15.15M, respectively, and a Monday projection of $11.8M. In addition to Avatar scoring the biggest 5th weekend of all-time ($42.8M), this 4-day number marks a new record for the Martin Luther King Weekend, easily ahead of the $46.145 million from Cloverfield‘s first weekend back in 2008.
Avatar has also become only the 2nd movie of all-time to hit over $1B overseas (currently at $1.115B), while the domestic tally now stands at $505.067M, #2 all-time and fastest ever to $500M domestic (Avatar did it in 32 days, while it took The Dark Knight 45 days). Worldwide cume stands at a massive $1.62 billion. Given its current rate, Avatar will beat Titanic‘s worldwide record of $1.843 billion in about a week or so.
Finishing in 2nd place for the 4-day weekend was The Book of Eli (est. $38.02M / est. $32.77M over the 3-day), while The Lovely Bones finished in 3rd place with an est. $20.538M 4-day weekend (est. $17.02M 3-day). Head on over the jump for the charts.
