Avatar‘s $5.067 million Tuesday, down just 0.9% from the day prior. Domestic cume still stands at #5 all-time with $441.024 million, but it’s only a hair below #4 Shrek 2 ($441.226 million), which it will fly past today.
Next on the list is Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope ($460.998 million) which it’ll pass sometime on Friday or Saturday. And then of course after that comes The Dark Knight ($533.345 million) and Titanic ($600.788 million). Avatar is very likely to pass The Dark Knight within the next three weeks. Head on over the jump for some more analysis and the daily chart.
Titanic‘s record is still in sight — both domestic and worldwide ($1.843 billion) — although it’s not safe to say that for certain quite yet. I’m still looking at $575-625 million and about $1.8-2.1 billion worldwide. I’ll have a better feel for its long-term status after this weekend.
Also worth noting with Tuesday’s gross is that the $5M+ consecutive streak is still in place at an extraordinary 26 straight days. Meanwhile it added a little more than $20 million overseas since the weekend and stands at $931.969 million for a massive worldwide figure of $1.373 billion.
Checking in on the Avatar vs. The Dark Knight match-up, the gap between the two films on a daily level has shrunk to just $7.862 million. Looking strictly at the Day 26 comparison, Avatar was 44% stronger than The Dark Knight on this day [see chart below–click to enlarge]:
Using my estimates, Avatar will cross above The Dark Knight on either Friday or Saturday of this week.
