Paramount Pictures has set a release date for the follow-up to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. The film will be released on June 29, 2012, roughly three years after the release of Star Trek (May 8, 2009). There are currently no other films slated for June 2012, although the month before has The Avengers (May 4, 2012) and Madagascar 3 (May 25, 2012).
The expectation has always been for a summer 2011 or summer 2012 release date, but there had been recent hints that it would likely fall into 2012. Given how crowded May-June, 2011 has become, the 2012 release date is probably a good move.
Star Trek was a solid hit for Paramount, grossing a respectable $257.47 million domestically However, overseas grosses were weaker than hoped, grossing a total of $385.459 million worldwide from a reported budget of between $140 and $150 million.
