Avatar took in a estimated 1st place $13.275 million on Friday, pushing the film’s domestic cume to an estimated $393.815 million through just 22 days of release. The film is poised to pass $400M domestically today (Saturday) and become the top-grossing film of 2009 this weekend (currently held by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at $402.112 million). Worldwide Avatar is at $1.176 billion.
In terms of new releases, Daybreakers finished out on top with an estimated 2nd place $5.9 million. That was well ahead of the two other new releases Leap Year (#5: $3.315 million) and Youth in Revolt (#7: $2.725 million).
Rounding out the top five, Sherlock Holmes was 3rd with an estimated $5.12 million, followed by Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel in 4th place with an estimated $3.55 million. More analysis after the jump.
Projecting out the weekend, Avatar will easily crush the fourth weekend record with somewhere between $45-50 million. The current fourth weekend record is held by Titanic ($28.716 million). Not only that, but Avatar will also hold the two highest-grossing January weekends ever.
Before we get to the daily chart, here’s the latest Avatar vs. TDK comparison chart (through day 22).
Avatar‘s 22nd day estimate of $13.275 million is a whopping 75% ahead of TDK‘s 22nd day ($7.577 million). As shown above, the gap between the two is now just $29.274 million. At this rate, I estimate that Avatar will pass up TDK – on a daily basis — next Friday or Saturday.
