Only a select few markets have yet to open James Cameron’s sci-fi 3D epic Avatar, one of which was China. But the film opened there on Monday and grossed an opening day record of 33.03 million yuan (about $4.8 million). That number beats the previous record, director Zhang Yimou’s A Simple Noodle Story on Dec. 10th, by nearly 60% (21 million yuan / about $3.1 million).
Avatar is very likely to beat the box office record set by 2012. As previously reported, 2012 has raked in 460 million yuan through the end of 2009 (about $67.4 million) since it premiered in China on Nov. 13th.
