The fourth season finale of Dexter drew a series and Showtime network high of 2.575 million viewers. The episode was the most-watched original series episode ever on the network and the most-watched telecast since a Mike Tyson fight in 1999. Year-on-year, Dexter was up a huge 71% from its third season finale.
Factoring in the 11:00 p.m. replay, the episode drew 3.078 million viewers, the first time a Showtime original series has attracted over 3 million viewers in a single night.
The impressive numbers also helped lead-out Californication hit a series high, 1.1 million viewers (an equally impressive 72% bump over last season’s finale).
For comparison purposes, Dexter drew 1.5 million viewers (1.99 million when combined with the 11pm encore) while Californication drew 615,000 viewers (937,000 when combined with its encore) last December. You can see my article on the year-ago finales by clicking this link.
