Avatar held steady on Tuesday as it passed the $250 million mark domestically with an impressive $18.291 million. That’s a decline of just 5.8% from the day prior and an incredible increase of 13.7% from the Tuesday prior. Coupled with last Tuesday’s performance ($16.086 million), Avatar now holds the 2nd and 3rd biggest non-opening Tuesday grosses.
Standing at $250.42 million domestically (and an updated $726.613 million worldwide), Avatar is tied for fifth-fastest in hitting the $250 million domestic mark, doing so in just 12 days. It also tied a record for most consecutive days at $10 million or above — tied with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen — and has a very good chance at breaking the tie tomorrow.
Rounding out the top three, the kid-friendly Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel passed the century mark with a solid $12.532 million ($100.218 million cume), while Sherlock Holmes finished slightly behind in third place with an estimated $10.24 million ($83.82 million cume). Head on over the jump for the daily chart.

Roland Emmerich’s 2012 has set a new record for the Chinese Box Office. The film has grossed $67.3 million as of last weekend, breaking the previous mark — also set in 2009 — by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
The new record comes just a few days after the Dec. 21st ruling by the WTO which upheld an earlier ruling that said China was restricting U.S. film, music and book imports. With the ruling of the WTO, Hollywood knows they they have a better chance of bringing over more of their movies and other media into mainland China.
Bigger box office grosses for Western movies in China is good news for both Hollywood and Chinese consumers who enjoy watching Western movies. Probably not so good news for the Chinese government, however, who continue to want to curb Western influence in their country as much as possible (with Western movies and other media a big target of that).

IMAX Corporation and 20th Century Fox announced that James Cameron’s Avatar has continued its record-breaking performance during its second weekend. The film grossed $8.8 million from 179 IMAX theatres domestically for the 12/25-12/27 weekend. Domestic box office in IMAX stands at $28 million.
Internationally, the film added another $3.6 million from 70 IMAX screens pushing its worldwide cume to $39 million.
“To have reached $39 million from 249 screens in just 10 days demonstrates that moviegoers clearly understand the value of experiencing Avatar in IMAX,” added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “James Cameron, Jon Landau and Lightstorm realized the vision of this film in IMAX, and we’re continuing to see the incredibly positive way that moviegoers are responding to that vision.”
The full press release follows after the jump.
