Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon had a better than expected Sunday performance for what amounted to an extraordinary $142.84 million for the weekend from 4,024 theaters. That’s the third best opening weekend of all-time behind The Dark Knight ($158.41 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($151.12 million) and it more than doubles the opening weekend gross of its predecessor Twilight ($69.64 million from 3,419 theaters)
‘New Moon’ opened on Friday with $72.20 million (including midnight screenings) and added $42.29 million on Saturday and $27.85 million on Sunday.
It had nearly as strong a performance overseas, where it opened to $132.1 million. Overall the film stands at $274.94 million worldwide.
