After a record-breaking Thursday midnight performance, Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon grossed an astonishing estimated $72.7 million on Friday, shattering the prior record held by The Dark Knight. ‘New Moon’ broke the record by playing on approximately 8,500 screens at 4,024 sites, while The Dark Knight grossed $67.2 million from around 9,300 screens at 4,366 sites in 2008.
What’s even more remarkable is that the film out-grossed the entire opening weekend of its predecessor Twilight — $69.6 million — in just one day.
Although most predict it will be heavily front-loaded, ‘New Moon’ is still expected to gross somewhere in the neighborhood of $130 million this weekend.
Another record was also broken on Friday: highest combined gross of the top 10 movies (also the first time that the top 10 grossed $100 million). All told, the top 10 movies grossed an estimated $104 million. The previous record came on the day The Dark Knight opened — July 18, 2008 — where the top 10 grossed $97.5 million.
