The Shield writer John Hlavin has been tapped by Screen Gems to pen the fourth installment in the Underworld franchise. Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films in the franchise, will produce but the film doesn’t have a director attached. Neither Rhona Mitra who starred in the third film — a prequel — or Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the first two movies and is rumored to be part of this one (although she denied the reports) are attached.
Hlavin told THR’s Heat Vision Blog that the plot is under wraps, “but I can tell you it’s not a prequel.” He added, “It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don’t want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements.”
Sony/Screen Gems have targeted a January 21, 2011 date to release Underworld 4. In totality, the three films in the franchise have grossed $298.1 million worldwide.
