HBO has renewed the hit political talk show Real Time With Bill Maher for an eighth season. The liberal-leaning talk show, which bowed in 2003, drew strong ratings last season in its new 10:00 p.m. time slot (1.2 million viewers) and was up 23% from its sixth season average.
Bill Maher has been a mainstay in the political talk arena since the early 90’s with Politically Incorrect. The show aired on Comedy Central from 1993-1996 before moving over to ABC in 1997 where it stayed on the air until 2002. Controversy surrounding comments Maher made surrounding the 9/11 terrorist attacks resulted in ABC canceling the show in June 2002 (although the network claims the show was canceled due to declining ratings). Regardless, Maher got back on his feet the following year in 2003 when he launched ‘Real Time’ on HBO.
