Broadcast TV Ratings for Thursday, October 15, 2009

CBS and ABC shared the winner’s circle last night, with ABC finishing in first among adults 18-49 and CBS taking the overall viewership crown, led by the night’s most-watched program CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.  ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy was the most-watched program among the coveted A18-49 demographic.

Survivor: Samoa won the 8:00 p.m. hour, however ABC’s FlashForward stabilized in its third week, increasing slightly across the board.  Also deserving kudos for the 8:00 p.m. hour was The CW’s The Vampire Diaries.  A rarity this season for the network, The Vampire Diaries has been a solid hit.  It drew its highest audience numbers since its series premiere, drawing nearly 3.9 million viewers and a 1.8 A18-49 rating.

At 9:00 p.m., the aforementioned ‘CSI’ and ‘Grey’s led the pack, but the hour was noteworthy in that NBC premiered the fourth season of Emmy Award-winning comedy 30 Rock.  To say the least, it was a very disappointing premiere.  The show was down nearly 30% from its year-ago season premiere.  Lead-in The Office was off a bit from last week’s special one-hour episode, but still drew a solid second place finish for the hour among A18-49.

Rounding out the rest of the evening, Private Practice won the 10:00 p.m. hour among adults 18-49, but The Mentalist took the overall viewership crown.  NBC’s The Jay Leno Show finished in third for the hour, slightly up from last week’s numbers.

Note: Network average numbers from the week prior are based on fast affiliate data. Comparison’s from the week prior (or episode-to-episode, etc.) on specific shows are based on final national data. Ratings for the current day are based on fast affiliates. (Expect all three scenarios to be the case at all times, unless otherwise noted). The final rating for first-run episodes that aired this evening will be reported the following week. So for example, the final rating for tonight’s episode of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” will be reported in next weeks report for Thursday, October 22, 2009. Also keep in mind that because these are fast affiliate numbers, when the finals are released there may be noticeable changes.

And lastly, there may be some errors in the data due to rounding/human error. I’ll do my best to limit those mistakes and correct them in time for the next week’s report.
