Broadcast TV Ratings for Thursday, September 24, 2009

ABC and CBS dominated the competition last night, with ABC coming out on top with an impressive debut for FlashForward (first place for the hour among all key categories and tied for second place on the evening among adults 18-49), while Grey’s Anatomy destroyed its competition as the night’s most-watched program, beating its nearest competitor (CBS’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) by a whopping 61% among adults 18-49.

‘Grey’s’ did that despite opening to its lowest levels in series history (although it was only off last season’s two-hour premiere numbers by 9% among viewers and 11% among adults 18-49).

Although CBS took second on the night, Survivor: Samoa was not hurt in any way from ABC’s series launch of FlashForward at 8:00pm, with the series actually gaining audience from the week prior across all key categories. The aforementioned 9:00pm season premiere of ‘CSI’ took second for the hour (and second on the evening among households and viewers and tied for second among adults 18-49), but took a serious hit compared against last season’s premiere (down more than 30% among viewers and more than 40% among adults 18-49). It should be noted that the reason for that decline was intense interest in new cast from last season’s premiere. The time slot premiere of The Mentalist — opening its second season — held onto more than 90% of ‘CSI’s‘ numbers and was hit with only a 3% decline from last season’s premiere among adults 18-49 (from a 3.5 rating to a 3.4 rating).

Moving to the rest of the networks, Fox was greatly affected from the series premiere of FlashForward and the season premieres of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and CBS’s ‘CSI’. At 8:00pm, Bones was off by more than 1.5 million viewers and more than 10% among adults 18-49, while Fringe faltered heavily in its new timeslot, falling a steep 25%, or nearly 2 million, among viewers and an equally bad 23% among adults 18-49.

Rounding out the rest of the networks, NBC gained no traction with its comedy/Leno block, with every show last night declining from the week prior.  The biggest declines came from Community (which in week two fell more than 30% among viewers and lost a quarter of its A18-49 audience) and The Jay Leno Show, which hit a series low last night and was down by more than 40% among viewers from the week prior.

Over on The CW — which face it, is desperate for some good news — got some with the third week of Vampire Diaries.  The series wasn’t hurt by the additional 8:00pm competition and actually had a slight bump in both viewers and adults 18-49 from the week prior.  Supernatural took a slight hit in viewers, but remained even from the week prior among adults 18-49.  Weak retention for the show (69% among viewers and 71% among adults 18-49) is still a concern.

Head on over the jump to check out the night’s complete ratings and breakdown’s.

Note: Network average numbers from the week prior are based on fast affiliate data. Comparison’s from the week prior (or episode-to-episode, etc.) on specific shows are based on final national data. Ratings for the current day are based on fast affiliates. (Expect all three scenarios to be the case at all times, unless otherwise noted). The final rating for first-run episodes that aired this evening will be reported the following week. So for example, the final rating for tonight’s episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” will be reported in next weeks report for Thursday, October 1, 2009. Also keep in mind that because these are fast affiliate numbers, when the finals are released there may be noticeable changes.

And lastly, there may be some errors in the data due to rounding/human error. I’ll do my best to limit those mistakes and correct them in time for the next week’s report.
