Broadcast TV Ratings for Wednesday, September 9, 2009

With Fox opting not to show President Obama’s address to Congress (sister cable networks Fox News and Fox Business Channel both showed the address), Fox was expected to get a boost for its premiere of So You Think You Can Dance.

That did not happen.

Instead the program fell by nearly 30% among viewers, and by more than 20% among adults 18-49.  Fox had better news for lead-out Glee, which improved upon its lead-in by an impressive 31% among adults 18-49.

Turns out that most Americans watching television at 8:00 last night  (nearly 20 million on ABC, CBS and NBC alone) were more interested in tuning into the address by President Obama:

  • HH rating/share; M viewers, A18-49 rating/share
  • NBC: 5.2/9; 7.15M; 1.6/5
  • ABC: 3.8/6; 5.12M; 1.1/3
  • CBS: 4.5/7; 6.86M; 1.6/5
  • Overall: 13.5 HH rating, 19.13 million viewers, 4.3 A18-49 rating.

The other new premiere last night came courtesy of The CW’s America’s Next Top Model.  While The CW creeped into the competition (for the first time in a while it didn’t take last place among adults 18-49), the premiere was down significantly from past season premieres.

Full ratings and breakdown’s, including week-to-week comparisons, etc., follows after the jump.

GO TO WEEKLY RATINGS PAGE

Notes: Network average numbers from the week prior are based on fast affiliate data. Comparison’s from the week prior (or episode-to-episode, etc.) on specific shows are based on final national data. Ratings for the current day are based on fast affiliate numbers. (Expect all three scenarios to be the case at all times, unless otherwise noted). The final rating for first-run episodes that aired this evening will be reported the following week. So for example, the final rating for tonight’s episode of “America’s Got Talent” will be reported in next weeks report for Wednesday, September 16, 2009. Also keep in mind that because these are fast affiliate numbers, when the finals are released there may be noticeable changes.

And lastly, there may be some errors in the data due to rounding/human error. I’ll do my best to limit those mistakes and correct them in time for the next week’s report.
