Playing in 700 theaters post-midnight, Universal Pictures’ Brüno, from star Sacha Baron Cohen, took in an impressive $1.6 million.
The strong midnight opening numbers virtually assure that the film — which on Friday opened wide to 2,755 theaters — will easily surpass Cohen’s 2006 hit ‘Borat’. That film took in $26.5 million from its first weekend at just 837 theaters. Based on the post-midnight numbers and early afternoon tallies, Brüno may be headed for a first place $37 million weekend.
‘Borat’ actually didn’t open wide until its second week, when it expanded to 2,566 theaters and grew 7% to $28.3 million. It ultimately ended at $128.5 million domestically and had a $261.6 million worldwide cume.
