Taking in an estimated $40.6 million on Saturday (+10.3% from Friday) and projected to tack on another $34.6M from Sunday grosses, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is expected to top out at around $112M for the weekend (Fri-Sat-Sun) and $201.25M for the five day (Wed-Thur-Fri-Sat-Sun) frame. That’s very close to the current five-day record holder The Dark Knight ($203.8M) and depending how Sunday’s numbers turn out, the record is still in sight.
The $112M three-day studio estimate is a new record for a June opener, easily eclipsing the $93.7M taken in by 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Regardless of that, ‘Transformers 2′ has more than surpassed expectations. In addition to its incredible domestic numbers the film has also done very well in internationally with an estimated $186.1M from 58 territories. That pushes its worldwide cume to an enormous $387.4M (the first movie grossed $389M internationally and $708.3M worldwide).
IMAX played a large part in Transformers’ success, grossing a record $14.4M in five days ($11.7 for the weekend) from a record 169 locations (Star Trek held the previous record with $8.5M from 13 sites).
