Casting Bites: Three Join Date Night, Casting for Two Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Projects, Monica Bellucci in The Sorcerers Apprentice + more

  • monicabellucci-051509Monica Bellucci has joined the cast of Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  The actress will play Veronica, a sorceress and the long-lost love of Nicolas Cage’s character, Balthazar Blake.  [Variety]
  • Christopher Lloyd has joined the cast of Alex Aja’s Piranha 3D.  The actor will star as Goodman, an expert on piranha. [Bloody-Disgusting]
  • Ray Liotta, Mila Kunis and Mark Ruffalo are joining Tina Fey and Steven Carell on the 20th Century Fox comedy Date Night. The three will be among the characters Fey and Carell encounter as a couple on a date. [THR]
  • Universal Picture is developing a modern retelling of the classic The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and they’ve tapped Keanu Reeves to star and Justin Haythe to pen the script. [THR]
  • Meanwhile, there’s another ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ project in Hollywood, and this one’s quite different.  Abel Ferrara is going for a contemporary take on the Robert Louis Stevenson original with a new film titled Jekyll and HydeForest Whitaker and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson are attached to play the lead roles.   • Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Robert Pattinson have all been signed on to star in the period drama Unbound Captives, from Madeleine Stowe, who’ll be making her directorial debut. [Variety]
  • Lindsay Lohan will star in the independent fantasy comedy The Other Side alongside Woody Harrelson, Giovanni Ribisi, Dave Mathews and Alanis Morissette. The film centers on a grad student who must spend the summer working at a scientific institute on a remote island. [Variety]
  • Jason Statham has been tapped to star in the $40M action thriller The Killer Elite.  Helmed by commercials director Gary McKendry, the project is based on Ranulph Fiennes’ bestseller The Feathermen.  Statham will play a former Navy Seal who is forced out of retirement to save his closet friend. [Variety]
  • Lauren Conrad’s departure from The Hills has opened up Kristin Cavallari to take her place.  The season five finale of the show on May 31st, will mark Cavallari’s ‘Hills’ premiere. [THR]
  • Lou Diamond Phillips is the latest star to join NBC’s reality series I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!. The actor will be competing against Heidi and Spencer Pratt, Janice Dickinson, Stephen Baldwin and Sanjaya Malakar. [US Magazine]
  • Mickey Rourke has been signed to star in a remake of the classic 1980’s British gangster film, Mona Lisa. Rourke will play an ex-con who takes a job as a chauffeur for a high-class escort. Additionally, Eva Green is in advanced negotiations to star opposite him. [Variety]
  • Jerry Lewis, who last had a big-screen role in 1995’s Funny Bones, will star in writer/director Daniel Noah’s Max Rose as a widower who revisits key moments in his life. [THR]
