Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to a film based on the life of Frank Sinatra from Mandalay Pictures. Phil Alden Robinson will be writing the screenplay, while Martin Scorsese has been tapped to direct as well as produce.
Finke reports that the Sinatra family gave their permission for the film, with the youngest daughter, Tina Sinatra, on board as an executive producer along with Robinson and Garry LeMel, the former president of Wanrer Bros. music.
In her original report, Finke noted that no names of actors who may play Sinatra were circulating yet, but she later updated to report that the studio may want Johnny Depp to take on the role:
Director Marty Scorsese may want Leonardo DiCaprio for the coming biopic about Frank Sinatra…But I hear Universal’s first choice to fill the role may be Johnny Depp. The studio is thrilled with his performance in this summer’s forthcoming Public Enemies and very much wants to stay in the Johnny Depp business.
