Movie Bites: American Gladiators Movie?, More Conan Director Rumors, Harry Potter 7 Set Photos + more

  • The teaser trailer for Airbender — which will be attached to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (see related story) — will run about 100 seconds. [Frank Marshall]
  • Jonny Ferraro, creator of the American Gladiators TV franchise, is working on a live-action adaptation of the property for the big-screen: “I look forward to creating a compelling story that launches a whole new set of characters,” Producer Scott Mednick said. [Variety]
  • Warner Home Videos has announced a 1-disc DVD, and 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray Director’s Cut’s of Watchmen for release on July 21st.  The director’s cut will feature 25 minutes of additional footage.  More details at DVD Active.

  • First we heard news that Brett Ratner had dropped out as director of Conan due to scheduling conflicts, then CHUD reported that James McTeigue may be in line for the directing duties, now comes additional news that Lionsgate is interested in three different choices: Christopher Gans, Neil Marshall and Marcus Nispel.  Head on over to CHUD for more details.
  • Aslyum has released the movie trailer for Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (out on store shelves May 26th) starring Lorenzo Lamas and Deborah Gibson.

  • Director Sam Mendes reveals that the script for Preacher, based on the Vertigo comic book series, is “about halfway” written: “There’s a long way to go yet, but I’m very, very hopeful. I think it could be amazing.” [MTV]
  • According to Youngblood creator Rob Liefeld, the movie is currently being written by the writing duo of J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani.  The duo are also working on another adaptation of a Liefeld comic (the Bryan Singer-produced Capeshooters).  Read more, inluding story details, over at MTV.
  • Three release dates to report: Lionsgate has set a December 4, 2009 date for Brothers which stars Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman.  While Paramount Pictures has set a June 18, 2010 release date for the Footloose remake and Fox has set an April 8, 2011 release date for the animated feature Rio.   • The Jean-Claude Van Damme/Vinnie Jones starrer Weapon will be the first film produced by the new production company Flagship Films. Directed by Russel Mulcahy, Weapon will stars Van Damme and Jones as Derek Chase and Jack Conway, the world’s most talented assassins. [Variety]
  • Warner Bros. has picked up the spec script The Gunslinger by John Hlavin. ‘Gunslinger’ follows an ex-Texas Ranger who will stop at nothing to find and punish the men who killed his brother and rescue his nephew. [THR]
  • Universal Pictures and Dark Horse Comics are partnering together to produce an adaptation of Micke Richardson’s graphic novel The Secret. [Variety]
  • has two new interviews with Terminator Salvation stars Christian Bale (here) and Sam Worthington (here).  Bale’s interview focuses solely on Terminator Salvation, while Worthington also discusses his other projects including Avatar and Clash of the Titans.
