CBS’s impressive procedural lineup of NCIS, The Mentalist and Without a Trace managed to push the network to first place for the evening among households, beating Fox by nearly one full rating point (10.9 vs. 10.0).  Among viewers, the network was second, but just barely (17.39M vs. 17.49M).

Moving to Fox, American Idol declined from last week’s numbers  but it was the numbers of Fringe that were more concerning.  The show’s retention fell to below 50% among both viewers and adults 18-49 with week-to-week declines of 18% among viewers and 14% among adults 18-49.

Although in third place overall, NBC was competitive among adults 18-49, finishing in a tie for second place with CBS in the demo thanks in large part to another solid outing from the two-hour Biggest Loser and better-than-normal numbers from a special episode of Dateline.

Rounding out the rest of the evening, ABC was in fourth place with two ‘Charlie Brown‘ specials, each of which performed poorly, back-to-back episodes of Scrubs (which has unfortunately not been able to capture any significant audience) and True Beauty, which away from normal lead-in The Bachelor, performed very poorly.  The CW’s lineup of 90210 and Privileged failed to break even 2 million viewers.  My full analysis of the night’s ratings follow after the jump.

supermanreturnssmall-424Check out this very, very interesting rumor.  AICN was sent in a scoop from a reader who had seen an interview with V for Vendetta director James McTeigue on a Berlin telvision station, and the director revealed that the Wachowski brothers’ next project, Plastic Man (of which he was scheduled to do some 2nd-unit shooting) has been put on hold at Warner Bros.

The bigger news, however, has to do with what the scooper has to say about the Superman franchise:

Bryan Singer has refused to undertake a re-boot of the Superman franchise and has left the Executives at WB with no choice but to takea fresh creative direction.

He stated the Wachowski Brothers had been approached to re-boot the franchise as a trilogy and they are currently reviewing their options as its like being asked to take the final play in a superbowl final. Says if they do agree, he will likely either succumb to providing second unit support on the movie or will champion the directorship of Plastic Man – He started to giggle as he stated its like a young child for the Brothers and they wont give that up easily.

christophernolandarkknight-021109Christopher Nolan’s next project will not be a ‘Dark Knight’ sequel, instead, the director is taking on an original screenplay he wrote called Inception for Warner Bros.  Nolan hopes to shoot the sci-fi action film in the summer for a release during summer 2010.

“Chris Nolan is a visionary filmmaker who continually raises the bar with each movie he makes,” Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov said. “We are thrilled to be collaborating again with him and Emma on this exciting new motion picture.”

According to THR, Inception is described as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.”

theunitedstatesoftara-122908Showtime has renewed its freshman series The United States of Tara for a 12-episode second season.  The half-hour drama, starring Toni Collete as a woman with dissociative identity disorder (also referred to as multiple personality disorder) premiered with an impressive 2.67 million viewers, the best for the network since 2004, and has performed well in subsequent weeks.

“It has been pure pleasure working with Diablo Cody, Toni Collette, Steven Spielberg and everyone at Dreamworks on United States of Tara,” said Showtime entertainment chief Robert Greenblatt announcing the pickup. “This show is a perfect fit for our premium brand and we’re thrilled that critics and audiences have responded to this groundbreaking show so well. I look forward to many more alternate personalities emerging from this unique series.”

Diablo Cody will be returning as a writer and executive producer for season two, which begins production this summer for an early 2010 premiere. Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank also serve as executive producers.
