tomandjerry-012209Warner Bros. is bringing the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series Tom and Jerry to the big screen, creating their own Alvin and the Chipmunks-like family franchise.

The studio is looking to bring the cat and mouse duo to life as CG characters that run around in live-action settings.

The film will be an origin story that reveals how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry before getting lost in Chicago and reluctantly working together during an arduous journey home, Variety reports.

Eric Gravning is penning the script.

academyawards-012109The biggest news, I feel, about the just-announced nominations for the 81st Academy Awards is that The Dark Knight was not nominated for best picture, best director OR best writing.

Heath Ledger did get a nomination for best supporting actor, but I find it absolutely extraordinary that The Dark Knight was relegated to one acting nomination and a bunch of technical nods.

Having seen all the films nominated for Best Picture — save The Reader which I’ll check out shortly — I’m just baffled that The Dark Knight didn’t get nominated.  The film was good enough for the producers and the writers and the directors, but the Academy didn’t see fit to award it with any of those nominations?

Heck, if The Dark Knight wasn’t your thing, then what about The Wrestler?  Snubbed for best director, best picture, best writing and even best original song for Bruce Springsteen?

It’s all just odd, and an absolute shame.

So it’ll be The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire for best picture.  Enough of my rambling, full list of nominations follows after the jump. (more…)
