Broadcast TV Ratings for Wednesday, May 28, 2008

My analysis of the night’s ratings follows after the jump.

CBS finished in first place for the evening with a 6.0/10 household rating/share, but was second among viewers (9.02 million) and third among adults 18-49 (2.0/6 rating/share).

  • Last Week:
    • 6.9/11 HH rating/share [#2]
    • 10.79M viewers [#2]
    • 2.7/7 A18-49 rating/share [#2]
  • 8:00 p.m.: CBS’s only original program on the night, Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular (5.2/9 HH rating/share, 7.91M viewers, 1.6/5 A18-49 rating/share) posted nearly identical numbers from the week prior, off just slightly among adults 18-49, while posting slight gains among households (8%) and viewers (4%) helping lead the network to a first place finish among households.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 4.9/8 to 5.2/9
      • Viewers – 7.59M to 7.91M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.8/5 to 1.6/5
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of Criminal Minds (6.4/10 HH rating/share, 9.71M viewers, 2.2/6 A18-49 rating/share).
    • Last week’s numbers (Criminal Minds – season three finale):
      • Households – 8.3/13
      • Viewers – 13.15M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.4/8
  • 10:00 p.m.: A repeat of CSI: NY (6.3/11 HH rating/share, 9.44M viewers, 2.4/7 A18-49 rating/share).
    • Last week’s numbers (CSI: NY – season four finale):
      • Households – 7.6/13
      • Viewers – 11.83M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.2/9

FOX followed in second place for the evening with a 5.8/10 household rating/share but was a stronger first place among both viewers (9.26 million) and adults 18-49 (3.6/10 rating/share).

  • Last Week:
    • 17.3/27 HH rating/share [#1]
    • 30.60M viewers [#1]
    • 11.0/29 A18-49 rating/share [#1]
  • 8:00 p.m.: So You Think You Can Dance? (5.8/10 HH rating/share, 9.26M viewers, 3.6/10 A18-49 rating/share) managed to show growth from its season premiere last Thursday, growing by 9% among households, 520,000/6% among viewers and 3% among adults 18-49. Though it can be argued, fairly I might add, that we have enough reality programming on the air, you have to give credit to Fox for effectively programming their wide range of reality programs.  A 3.6 rating among adults 18-49 as we enter the summer months is quite impressive.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (Thursday, 5/22/2008):
      • Households – 5.3/9 to 5.8/10
      • Viewers – 8.74M to 9.26M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.5/10 to 3.6/10
    • Last week’s numbers (American Idol):
      • Households – 17.7/28
      • Viewers – 31.66M
      • Adults 18-49 – 11.4/30

ABC finished in third place for the evening with a 4.0/7 household rating/share and 5.91 million viewers, but managed a second place finish among adults 18-49 with a 2.1/6 rating/share.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.9/5 HH rating/share [#4]
    • 4.18M viewers [#4]
    • 1.2/3 A18-49 rating/share [#4]
  • 8:00 p.m.: Wife Swap (4.0/7 HH rating/share, 5.78M viewers, 2.2/7 A18-49 rating/share) returned from its one-week hiatus down slightly among viewers (500,000/8%) and adults 18-49 (12%).
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (5/14/2008):
      • Households – 4.0/7 to 4.0/7
      • Viewers – 6.28M to 5.78M
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.5/7 to 2.2/7
  • 9:00 p.m.: While Wife Swap was unable to match its most recently aired numbers, lead-out Supernanny (4.4/7 HH rating/share, 6.64M viewers, 2.6/7 A18-49 rating/share) managed to post gains across all three main categories; households (16%), viewers (750,000/13%) and adults 18-49 (8%).
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (5/14/2008):
      • Households – 3.8/6 to 4.4/7
      • Viewers – 5.89M to 6.64M
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.4/6 to 2.6/7
  • 10:00 p.m.: The recently canceled series Men In Trees (3.7/6 HH rating/share, 5.31M viewers, 1.6/5 A18-49 rating/share) posted virtually identical ratings from its last newly aired episode in April (+1% among viewers and +7% among adults 18-49).  Certainly not a strong enough showing to change ABC’s mind about canceling the series.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (4/23/2008):
      • Households – 3.8/6 to 3.7/6
      • Viewers – 5.26M to 5.31M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.5/4 to 1.6/5
    • Last week’s numbers (Boston Legal – season four finale):
      • Households – 4.2/7
      • Viewers – 6.47M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.6/4

NBC followed in fourth place for the evening with a 2.8/5 household rating/share, 4.46 million viewers and a 1.9/5 rating/share among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 4.4/7 HH rating/share [#3]
    • 6.29M viewers [#3]
    • 1.7/4 A18-49 rating/share [#3]
  • 8:00 p.m: Stanley Cup Finals: Game 3: Red Wings at Penguins (2.8/5 HH rating/share, 4.46M viewers, 1.9/5 A18-49 rating/share). Check out these increases from the comparable year-ago numbers; households (+155%), viewers (+2.83M/173%), adults 18-49 (+217%).  You don’t see those improvements very often, mostly because a program never gets the chance to improve upon such horrible numbers as the Stanley Cup finals posted last year!  Regardless, this is a rather welcome bit of news to the NHL and NBC collectively.  Overall, the three Stanley Cup games that aired on the network last year (Games 3-5) posted the following numbers: 1.6/3 HH rating/share, 2.44M viewers, 1.0/3 A18-49 rating/share.
    • Year-to-year numbers (Stanley Cup Finals: Game 3: Ducks at Senators – Saturday, 6/2/2007):
      • Households – 1.1/2 to 2.8/5
      • Viewers – 1.63M to 4.46M
      • Adults 18-49 – 0.6/2 to 1.9/5
    • Last week’s numbers (Law & Order – season 18 finale):
      • Households – 5.9/10
      • Viewers – 8.57M
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.6/7

The CW finished in fifth place for the evening with a 1.6/3 household rating/share, 2.45 million viewers and a 0.9/3 rating/share among adults 18-49.

Note: Network average numbers from the week prior are based on fast national data. Comparison’s from the week prior (or episode-to-episode, etc.) on specific shows are based on final national data. Ratings for the current day are based on fast nationals. (Expect all three scenarios to be the case at all times, unless otherwise noted). The final rating for first-run episodes that aired this evening will be reported the following week. So for example, the final rating for tonight’s episode of “So You Think You Can Dance?” will be reported in next weeks report for Wednesday, June 4, 2008.

Also keep in mind that because these are fast national ratings, numbers may increase or decrease when the final nationals are released.
