It’s finally official. Variety is reporting that director Guillermo del Toro has been signed to helm both The Hobbit and its sequel. Once his current project–Hellboy II: The Golden Army–concludes, Del Toro will be moving to New Zealand for four years, where he will oversee production of the two films, alongside executive producer Peter Jackson. NBC drew better than average numbers on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough to overcome American Idol, which led Fox to another first place Wednesday night showing.

Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer has landed the female lead role opposite Tom Hanks in Ron Howard’s The Da Vinci Code prequel, Angels and Demons, according to EW. The actress was last seen in Steven Spielberg’s Munich. Angels and Demons is set to hit theaters on May 15, 2009.

Superman Returns star Brandon Routh, who admits he was never contacted by the studio to be part of the now “tabled” Justice League of America film says that the timing was off to release the film now. Routh also talked about filming for Man of Steel. Details after the jump.

Guillermo del Toro told SCI FI Wire that if Hellboy II: The Golden Army is successful enough to warrant a sequel, he already has a plan in place for a third film in the series, and that the third film would be the last in the franchise.

Earlier this month it was reported that Brendan Fraser filmed a cameo for Stephen Sommer’s G.I. Joe (check out that article here).
