Broadcast TV Ratings for Wednesday, April 16, 2008

ABC got strong numbers from its coverage of the Democratic Debate (the highest viewership of the season thus far on network or cable), but Fox still took the evening thanks to American Idol.

It wasn’t all good news on Fox though, as returning comedies ‘Til Death and Back to You failed to capitalize on its earlier American Idol lead-in support they received in March and February, respectably.  ‘Til Death was off by 4.15 million/42% among viewers and 53% among adults 18-49, while Back to You was off a similarly disappointing 5.15 million/42% and 45% among adults 18-49.

Sure no one expected the comedies to hold onto their post ‘Idol‘ numbers, but the overall average of just 6.42 million viewers and a 2.2/7 rating/share among adults 18-49 can’t be labeled anything other than a disappointment.

Back to ABC, Men In Trees wasn’t able to take advantage of its stronger than average lead-in.  There was little growth from the prior episode, and retention was just 57% among both viewers and adults 18-49.  Te weak performance kept ABC in third place for the evening

CBS was a respectable second place on the evening, drawing solid numbers for Criminal Minds (+6% among A18-49 from the week prior) and CSI: NY (+16% among adults 18-49 from the week prior), though Big Brother still remains the weak link.

Rounding out the rest of the evening, NBC only aired one original program (Deal or No Deal), while The CW continues to get well below average numbers for its flagship series America’s Next Top ModelThe Pussycat Dolls: Presents failed to attract 2 million viewers.

FOX finished in first place for the evening with a 8.7/14 household rating/share, 14.58 million viewers and a 5.4/15 rating/share among adults 18-49.
